Cancer Research: Learn More

The funds raised at LoveCures exclusively support research at the CRI.
In three years, LoveCures has donated nearly $200,000 to cancer research.

Investigating new cancer drugs in novel setting

The Scott & White Cancer Research Institute (CRI), a non-profit arm of Scott & White Healthcare, is designed to accelerate the development of new therapies for human diseases. Opened in 2005, it is one of the few institutes of its kind worldwide, linking new discoveries and clinical care. The Institute, part of Temple's Health and Bioscience District, has 15 scientists on staff devoted to finding effective cancer therapies quickly and cost-effectively.

WHY CRI?

Discoveries are brought to the CRI to complete the necessary steps for introducing new treatments to the clinic:
  • Preclinical work to establish the therapeutic index
  • Process development to determine the standard operating procedure for manufacture
  • Drug production for clinical use
  • Quality control analyses of vialed agents
  • Formal pharmacology and toxicology studies
  • Investigational new drug application documentation
  • Phase I clinical trial management and subject care

CRI personnel provide care for patients from Central Texas and the entire United States through promising experimental therapies. In addition, we have compliance and administrative teams to ensure that all FDA requirements are met, funds are properly used, and personnel and facilities maintain the highest standards. Graduate students, physician fellows and biotechnology/biomedical students receive advanced training at the CRI.

With our focus, experience and close working relationships with regulatory groups, the Institute provides immense benefits to patients, national and international research sponsors and the clinical community.

The funds raised at LoveCures exclusively support research at the CRI.  To date, LoveCures has donated nearly $200,000.00.  Dr. Art Frankel, CRI Executive Director, was able to use the $200,000 donated since 2008 by LoveCures to secure a major grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT)
Texas voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment in 2007 establishing the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and authorizing the state to issue $3 billion in bonds to fund groundbreaking cancer research and prevention programs and services in Texas.  CPRIT’s goal is to expedite innovation and commercialization in the area of cancer research and to enhance access to evidence-based prevention programs and services throughout the state.  Under the guidance of its governing body, the Oversight Committee, CPRIT accepts applications and awards grants for a wide variety of cancer-related research and for the delivery of cancer prevention programs and services by public and private entities located in Texas. All CPRIT-funded research will be conducted in state by Texas-based scientists and reflect CPRIT’s mission to attract and expand the state’s research capabilities and create high quality new jobs in Texas.

CPRIT’s objective is to position Texas as a world-class leader in research and prevention through collaboration with a variety of entities, including public and private institutions of higher education, academic health institutions, universities, governmental organizations, nongovernmental organizations, public and private companies and others involved in the fight against cancer.  CPRIT supports innovation in the selection of research projects emphasizing immediate or long-term medical breakthroughs; commercialization opportunities for research, and prevention services and health education for citizens with culturally appropriate information about ways in which their risks of developing and dying from cancer can be reduced.
